Social media

Dave is an engineer. Besides, he has been managing websites and social media profiles/pages/groups for many years.

He has been dealing with the advertising area too, i.e. AdWords and its counterparts/companions on Facebook and Youtube – up then, advertising on Youtube was not the same as advertising on Google.

He has been doing all this for himself, his practice and other organizations.

Before big platforms became kings of the web

Dave has lived and worked in many countries, all the while experimenting on the Internet.

He set up profiles in discussion forums, e.g., to socialize and improve his knowledge of foreign languages while living abroad.

Those were the days before Facebook and other social media became kings of the web.

Google wasn’t the king of browsing.

When browsing you used Netscape and the likes. Then Yahoo came to prominence.

Gmail didn’t exist at all.

BTW, Dave set up some of the first profiles ever on Gmail.

A witness of developments on the Internet

You may thereby say Dave has been experiencing and testing it all from the beginning, because he has:

  • Witnessed Facebook and its likes reaching the stars, then beginning to decide what people could say, read, watch, listen to
  • Been experimenting on Google and trying to get his message through – to the right people.

You may say he is a witness: first, the Internet became the voice of the voiceless; then, it became the realm of policies – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on.

Dave isn’t just a witness, as he has been using all those tools from the very beginning. There is nothing better than doing this to learn – and to get your message through, notwithstanding those tools’ ever-changing policies.

Privacy and free speech

Dave is very concerned about free speech and privacy on the Internet.

What he is witnessing now scares him, as social media are “taking control” of our life on the Internet.

They are not giving voice to everyone, any more. Therefore, they are apparently influencing how we think.

Therefore, Dave has decided time has come to share his knowledge.

SOME RESULTS DAVE GOT

Facebook, websites and SEO

The Facebook page he set up for a local organization was the first such a page in a large geographical area.

To be precise, Dave first set it up as a profile, as in those times it was usual to set up profiles.

At any rate, that profile/page was an absolute first and such it remained for some years.

In the meantime, he half-coded the first website for his practice.

Back then, there were some tools that helped you doing this, but the bulk was up to you.

Coding included SEO, obviously.

Back then, SEO consisted mainly of writing the right description, keywords and so on inside the code. There were some basic rules to respect, obviously, such as avoiding keyword stuffing.

Then specialized blogs, engineering websites, and so on came

Here are two examples:

  • A website on strategy and geopolitics – often on the first page of Google search results for some very competitive keywords
  • A website on Industry 4.0 – a dedicated website set up and managed by Dave, which got more than 1.500 unique visitors per month in just four months.

As you will note, Dave is still dealing with engineering.

Not only Internet and social media

You got him: Dave has been dealing with strategy and geopolitics for a long time. This has helped him a lot because:

  • Social media have a strategy – which they do not share
  • Understanding the web-sphere is very similar to dealing with geopolitics.

BTW, in Dave’s opinion many social media are doing geopolitics. It seems to him they are tools no more – they are apparently trying to shape the future of planet Earth.

He doesn’t like this.

Censorship and loss of privacy

Dave also happen not to like censorship and loss of privacy on the web.

As for the local organization – a cause – whose online presence he was taking care for, its message is still reaching a wide audience.

Nowadays, it is a miracle for a Facebook page to get such results.

BTW, Facebook has never received a single dime in payment for advertising.

Mind, the messages this page is communicating are controversial and uncomfortable for local politicians – as true causes’ messages should be.

Magic

In the old glorious days – that is, before the latest Facebook rules – this page got thousand upon thousand of views. Not bad for a local page, isn’t it?

BTW, shares of this organization’s web-posts get many impressions on Facebook.

Magic?

Maybe.

At any rate, Dave hopes to teach you some magic.
